Male Mentoring Program

Pi Omega partnered with both Baltimore City Public School System, and the Baltimore City Health Department to develop our mentoring program.  In nearly 20-years, we have mentored more than 1,000 students in the City's K-12 system.

Members of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. volunteer to operate, manage, and support the program by participating in weekly classroom activities and bi-weekly training sessions at the Fraternity's Community Center.  Each year the program enrolls at-risk students ranging in age from eight-fourteen.  The children join the program in the third or fourth grade and remain members until graduation from High School.  Members of the Fraternity monitor the student's academic performance, promote community involvement, and oversee leadership development.

The program's participants are inner-city children considered to be living in very high-risk communities.  The United States Census 2000 Report indicates that the community directly surrounding the Fraternity Center is approximately 90% African-American with an average household income below $24,000 per year.  By all accounts, the neighborhood is currently challenged by virtually every urban ill: poverty, unemployment, poor health, low student achievement, illiteracy, teen pregnancy, and substance abuse.

Day-to-day challenges of this nature severely restrict a child's experience and outlook on life.  Just blocks away, children can see the downtown Baltimore skyline, with its glass and concrete office towers, and yet many of them have never had the opportunity to view the building from the inside out.

The Omega Academy Principle Achievers Mentoring Program provides a holistic approach empowering children to realize their full potential and develop the self-esteem needed for success and personal fulfillment.  We establish realistic goals that promote improving school performance, enhancing computer skills, and managing social interactions.  At least two or three of the mentors go to the respective schools every week and introduce the students to professional men capable of walking them through the halls and executive suites of Baltimore's Skyscrapers.    We provide motivational incentives that include visits to local colleges, museums, concerts, and plays.  The young men participate in the fraternity's community service projects and learn the values of humanitarian service.

The alignment of a large and small omega represents the mentoring relationship between a caring adult and a child seeking to unlock and fulfill his or her potential. The double omega icon embodies a commitment to quality mentoring in all its many and varied forms.
